Liverpool supporters around the world were saddened today after Sir Kenny Dalglish confirmed he is currently undergoing treatment following a cancer diagnosis.
The Liverpool legend shared the news himself in a statement released via social media, reassuring supporters that his treatment is progressing positively while also asking for privacy for himself and his family.
In a statement that reflected both his courage and trademark sense of humour, Sir Kenny said:
“As my inadvertent social media post has indicated, I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer.
Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well.”
Even while sharing deeply personal news, Dalglish’s wit remained intact, drawing admiration from supporters who know him as one of football’s most respected and resilient figures.
The 75-year-old explained that he had never intended for the diagnosis to become public knowledge.
“Ideally, this would have remained private because that’s the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand.”
He went on to request privacy for himself and his family as treatment continues.
“Obviously I did not mean to make this matter public so I would appreciate it if the privacy of my family and myself are respected.”
Sir Kenny also took the opportunity to praise the medical staff caring for him.
“As ever, thank you to the wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others. They are a credit to themselves.”
