Liverpool legend Sir Kenny Dalglish has been sent supportive messages as he confirmed his cancer diagnosis. The 75-year-old shared the news on his Instagram today (June) as the legendary number seven said: "As my inadvertent social media post has indicated, I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer.

"Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well. Ideally, this would have remained private because that’s the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand. Obviously I did not mean to make this matter public so I would appreciate it if the privacy of my family and myself are respected.

"As ever, thank you to the wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others. They are a credit to themselves.”

Dalglish joined the Reds in 1977 from Celtic and has went on to become one of the club's most important ever figures. He won multiple league titles and scored the winning goal in the 1978 European Cup final during his glittering playing career.

He became player/manager in 1985 and was equally successful in the dugout as he oversaw a trophy laded period in the late 1980s. Dalglish was a pillar for the club and the city during its darkest time in the wake of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

News of his cancer diagnosis has been met with an outpouring of support, who have sent messages to a figure who transcends football in this city.

An official statement from Liverpool FC said: "The support, best wishes and love of everyone at Liverpool FC are, and will continue to be, with Sir Kenny and his family."

Dalglish's son, Paul, took to the comments of the Instagram post and said: "Love you Dad. You got this." Former boxer Paul Smith Junior added: "Get well soon Kenny"

Retired Premier League striker Alan Shearer, who played under Dalglish at Blackburn Rovers, said: "Everyone is with you Kenny." Former Liverpool FC goalkeeper, Sander Westerveld, said: "YNWA, King."

Former Reds player Lucas Leiva shared a series of heart emojis. Former Everton Women player Toni Duggan commented: "Sending lots of love."

Reds legend Robbie Fowler said: "Sending you lots of love Sir King." Former Liverpool striker Robbie Keane posted: "Sending my best Sir Kenny."
