Thomas Muller has questioned Anthony Gordon's choice to reject Bayern Munich in favor of Barcelona.

The former Newcastle winger completed a move to the Camp Nou this week, despite an inconsistent campaign with the Magpies. The transfer came after Bayern had also declared its interest in the Englishman, yet failed to meet Newcastle's valuation of him.

Liverpool was also linked with Gordon, a former Everton player, but it's believed the Reds were not in the running to sign him this summer. Former Bayern forward Muller has now shared his thoughts on the deal, acknowledging the attraction of playing under Hansi Flick at Barcelona, while admitting he remains puzzled by Gordon's preference for the Catalan club.

Speaking to Bild, the German said: "If Barcelona and Bayern come, what was the deciding factor for Gordon not coming to Munich? I know Hansi Flick very well, of course.

"It's a lot of fun playing under him, both in terms of his leadership and his style of play. But I would go to FC Bayern."

Gordon put pen to paper on a five-year deal at Barcelona and revealed at his official presentation that representing the club had been a lifelong ambition.

He said: "I wanted to speak Spanish because, as a kid, I believed I would play for Barca, believe it or not.

"I was excited to play for Barca when I was three years of age. I have a physio in Newcastle, and we spoke every day, and I told him one day I would play for Barca, so I want to learn Spanish. That's why."

He added: "I found out very late from Barca [of their interest], but as soon as I knew Barca was a serious option, there was never any question.

"I always wanted Barca. Barca are the biggest club on the planet. I know it comes with a lot of responsibility.

"I'm ready for that kind of challenge. I know the players who have worn the shirt in the past. It holds a lot of weight, but I am ready for the challenge."

While Gordon will undoubtedly be keen to hit the ground running with Barcelona, his immediate attention turns to his England duties.

The winger has been included in the England squad for this summer's World Cup, to be held across the United States, Mexico and Canada. Gordon has made 17 appearances for the Three Lions to date, netting twice.

He heads into the tournament on the back of a highly productive club campaign, having struck 17 goals for Newcastle this season — his most prolific return in front of goal — though nine of those came from the penalty spot.
