Why Chelsea have not put a price tag on defender yet this summer

Chelsea have two potentially massive sales on their hands this summer, although they’re dealing with them quite differently.

There are a lot of similarities between the Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez situations at Chelsea.

Both are big name, regular starters over the last few years. Both spoke out openly in the international break and hinted they could leave this summer.

Yet sitting here in June, Chelsea have briefed very openly that they’d take £120m for Enzo, but haven’t been so clear on Cucurella. Why is that? Bobby Vincent of Football.London has the answer.

Chelsea want to make Enzo’s real price very clear

According to the journalist, the reason is that rumours had already begun circulating – “believed to have been sourced from [Enzo’s] camp” – that the midfielder would be available for “considerably cheaper” than the £107m Chelsea paid in January 2023.

Chelsea felt it necessary to make their real price very clear, to shut down any talk he might be available cheap. With Cucurella, there has yet to be any speculation that needs to be corrected.

We wonder if that will still be true come September…

In other news…

Josh Acheampong is one player who Xabi Alonso will apparently be counting on – although we’ve seen little to no evidence from the club in the last couple of years of how much they rate him.

Chelsea’s plan for what to do with their strikers is also pretty uncertain, with a number of options available without any one looking too appealing as Joao Pedro’s backup.
