Liverpool could press ahead with their transfer plans despite uncertainty over the managerial position at Anfield following the sacking of Arne Slot.
Slot was shown the exit door after two years in charge, marking only the sixth managerial departure at the club this century.
Outgoing Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has reportedly reached an agreement to replace the Premier League-winning boss, with official confirmation expected by the end of the week. The 43-year-old would become only the second Spanish manager in Liverpool’s history, following Rafael Benítez.
While the club’s hierarchy focuses on appointing a new head coach, Yan Diomande is nearing a decision on his future, with talk of a possible swap deal also emerging.
Elsewhere, Al-Ettifaq have confirmed the departure of former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum. The Netherlands international will become a free agent this summer following the mutual termination of his contract.
The 35-year-old, who joined in 2023, has had his contract terminated due to financial considerations within the club’s structure.
Although signed as a marquee addition to help lead the project, both parties have now opted to move in different directions ahead of the 2026-27 season.
The Dutchman enjoyed a steady and productive spell in the Middle East, becoming a key figure in the side. Despite the challenges some European players have faced adapting to the league, Wijnaldum remained a regular starter, often linking midfield and attack.
However, with the club looking to balance their wage structure and free up foreign player slots, the former Newcastle United man was identified for departure. He leaves after an impressive campaign, captaining the team and helping them finish seventh in the league.
Wijnaldum recorded 16 goals and seven assists in 33 league appearances this season, underlining his continued influence at the top level.
As a free agent, he is expected to attract interest from Europe and beyond, with reports suggesting a return to the Premier League could appeal to him.
Given his experience with Liverpool and Newcastle United, alongside Champions League and Premier League success, several clubs may view him as a short-term option to add leadership and control in midfield.
The chapter closes, but the legend remains forever, Thank you Gini🙏#Ettifaq💚❤️ pic.twitter.com/3eeOSHKbkp
