Real Madrid midfielder Arda Guler has been included in Turkey’s 26-man World Cup squad. The 21-year-old recently won UEFA’s Champions League Revelation of the Season award after registering two goals and four assists as Real Madrid reached the quarter-finals.
Güler is joined by Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayındır, Brighton defender Ferdi Kadıoğlu and former Liverpool defender Ozan Kabak in head coach Vincenzo Montella’s final squad.
Turkey open their Group D campaign against Australia on June 14, before facing Paraguay on June 20 and the United States on June 26. The tournament, co-hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico, begins on June 11.
Ozan Kabak currently plays for Bundesliga side Hoffenheim, but his future is uncertain with his contract set to expire in the summer.
The Turkey international began his career at Galatasaray before moving on to Stuttgart and Schalke, followed by spells at Liverpool and Norwich City (both on loan), and has been with Hoffenheim since the summer of 2022.
He joined Liverpool as a 20-year-old during a mid-season injury crisis and was brought in to cover for Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip. Kabak made 13 appearances for the club but never played in front of supporters at Anfield due to Covid-19 restrictions in 2021.
“I was proud to be part of this special family,” he said upon the end of his spell. “I will always remember my days here at Liverpool with great happiness.”
