Geno Smith gets ‘baller’ take from Adonai Mitchell after Jets return

The New York Jets have committed to Geno Smith as their starting quarterback for the 2026 season. Wide receiver Adonai Mitchell is down with that plan.

Still early in the offseason, Smith will have an opportunity to fully mesh with his offense in training camp. But so far, Mitchell likes what he sees, via Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic.

“He's a baller,” Mitchell said of Smith. “He's the alpha of the room.”

The wide receiver came to the Jets in the trade that sent Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts. In his first eight games with New York, Mitchell caught 24 passes for 301 touchdowns and two touchdowns. The franchise still has Garrett Wilson and just drafted Omar Cooper Jr. But Mitchell should still carve out a role in the Jets' offense.

All three receivers are preparing to catch passes from Smith. His one year with the Las Vegas Raiders ended on a whimper, as he went 2-13 as a starter. Furthermore, the quarterback threw for 3,025 yards, 19 touchdowns and a league-leading 17 interceptions.

Still, it wasn't long ago that Smith was in the Pro Bowl. He made it in both 2022 and 2023 in fact. Head coach Aaron Glenn at least seems confident in the veteran. It's not like he is the long-term option anyway, but New York isn't looking to get embarrassed.

The development of Mitchell will be one of the bigger storylines for the Jets offense. They want to see if he can be a long-term piece of their passing attack. Mitchell seems to like his chances catching passes from Smith and is now ready to prove himself in his first full year with the Jets.
