'Multiple approaches' - Chelsea make defender transfer decision set to impact Newcastle United…

The latest transfer talk from Newcastle United as the Magpies prepare for a hectic summer transfer window.

Chelsea have reportedly made a firm decision on the future of a player linked with a move to Newcastle United in recent months.

The Magpies are set for a hectic summer transfer window as they look to move on from what had been a deeply disappointing season as they failed to qualify for Europe and were unable to build on the momentum gained by bringing an end to a 70-year wait for major domestic silverware during the previous campaign.

A goalkeeper is believed to be high on the agenda - but there is also a need to strengthen Eddie Howe’s defensive ranks and there have been strong suggestions Newcastle retained an interest in Chelsea academy product Josh Acheampong after he struggled to find consistent game-time at Stamford Bridge last season.

Standard Sport have reported Chelsea have ‘rebuffed multiple approaches’ from clubs in England and across Europe and have ‘no plans’ to sell the academy product as he prepares for life under new manager Xabi Alonso after he was confirmed as permanent successor to Liam Rosenior last month. The report goes a step further and suggests Acheampong is viewed as an ‘untouchable’ member of the squad Alonso will inherit and will be part of their plans for their first season under the former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid head coach.

Acheampong was the subject of interest from Crystal Palace following the sale of former Magpies target Marc Guehi to Manchester City during the January transfer window and Liverpool were also linked with a move for his services over the last year. Newcastle’s interest in the six-times capped England Under-21 international was initially reported last summer after he was reportedly under consideration for a move to St James Park prior to the Magpies completing the signing of AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw.

The versatile defender is believed to have admirers within United’s recruitment staff - but it now appears certain he will remain with Chelsea and will look to make a big impact under Alonso after making just 14 starts in all competitions during what was another season of change at Stamford Bridge.
