It is no secret the Magpies are on the lookout for a new goalkeeper this summer with neither Nick Pope nor Aaron Ramsdale impressing last season.

Pope made several high-profile mistakes, which at one stage saw him dropped for Ramsdale, before being restored for the remaining five matches of the campaign.

Ramsdale, meanwhile, has returned to parent club Southampton after Newcastle decided not to trigger the £20million clause to make his stay permanent.

Ewen Jaouen to Newcastle United & Chelsea claims played down

Last month, foreign journalist Sacha Tavolieri claimed France under-21s international Jaouen had agreed to join Newcastle following a visit to the club’s training ground, and that a fee of £17.4million plus bonuses was being discussed between the United and Reims.

However, reports that Jaouen had visited Tyneside were soon denied by sources close to Newcastle, as were the suggestions that a deal was advanced.

Now it appears similar has happened from Chelsea’s side.

Canal Plus, as relayed by Get French Football, has claimed Jaouen has also visited Chelsea’s Cobham training ground but Standard Sport understands that is not the case, and neither the Blues or sister club RC Strasbourg are interested in signing him.

The 20-year-old conceded just 35 goals in 34 appearances for Reims last season but was unable to help get them back to Ligue 1 at the first attempt.

Real Madrid have also been linked with a move but it’s clear that any potential deal isn’t as advanced as some outlets in France have made out.
