Wesley Fofana Determined to Stay Despite Barcelona Approach: Reports

Wesley Fofana has been continuously linked with a move to Barcelona from Chelsea and is amongst the most discussed names for the window. But sources close to the 25-year-old have revealed that the France international has no interest whatsoever in leaving Stamford Bridge in the summer.

The centre-back’s representatives are said to have offered him to the Catalan giants, with reports claiming that talks had taken place over recent weeks to sound out a deal. But those close to the defender insist he is still fully committed to fighting for his place in west London with the speculation swirling. The defender has absolutely no desire to leave Chelsea this summer, regardless of the noise surrounding his future.

Fofana came to Stamford Bridge from Leicester City in a deal that cost Chelsea €80.4m back in 2022. Injuries have repeatedly limited his time in the capital, with a serious knee problem ruling him out for the entire 2023-24 season. But the Frenchman has rediscovered his feet this term, playing in 34 fixtures in all competitions after years of injury frustration.

His financial picture, too, accounts for much of his position. It is understood the defender is on £200,000-a-week-plus and is under contract until 2029, with few clubs likely to match those terms.

Barcelona’s Centre-Back Search Continues As Bastoni Pursuit Stalls

Fofana’s chase is part of a much wider hunt for defensive reinforcements ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. Manager Hansi Flick wants to find a long-term central partner for the highly rated Pau Cubarsi in the heart of his backline.

Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan has been the preferred target for the reigning La Liga champions for a long time. But the Italian’s rumoured €70 million valuation has made things very difficult, and talks have ground to a halt with no obvious solution in sight.

That stumbling block has sent Barcelona looking for cheaper options, with names like Cristian Romero entering the wider conversations. Chelsea are reported to be looking for around €30m plus add-ons for Fofana, but Barcelona want to take him on loan with an option to buy. Whether the Catalans will ultimately commit, given the player’s clear desire to stay put, is genuinely unclear.
