Liverpool supporters have spent months discussing the fallout from Ibrahima Konaté’s contract situation.
But while the focus remains on the French defender’s departure, another concern is quietly approaching.
Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai now have just two years remaining on their contracts.
And Liverpool simply cannot allow history to repeat itself.
The club has already learned a painful lesson.
Too many times in recent years Liverpool have allowed important players to drift towards the final stages of their deals.
Negotiations have been delayed.
Speculation has grown.
Leverage has disappeared.
And valuable assets have either left for free or placed the club in a weak negotiating position.
Supporters are understandably fed up with the cycle.
Mac Allister and Szoboszlai are not squad players.
They are two of Liverpool’s most important midfielders.
Both are entering the prime years of their careers.
Both would command enormous transfer fees if they were placed on the market today.
And both should be viewed as key pieces of Liverpool’s long-term future.
That is precisely why action is required now.
Not next year.
Not when they have one year remaining.
Now.
Mac Allister remains one of the most complete midfielders at the club.
Despite facing criticism at times, he has consistently shown his quality in difficult circumstances.
His technical ability, intelligence and versatility make him an important player for any Liverpool manager.
Replacing him would cost a fortune.
Keeping him should be the priority.
The same applies to Szoboszlai.
The Hungarian captain remains one of Liverpool’s biggest talents.
While opinions on his performances may vary, there is no doubting his ability.
Players with his physical profile, technical quality and leadership potential are not easy to find.
If Liverpool genuinely see him as part of the future, they need to demonstrate that through a new contract.
The danger is obvious.
Every month that passes without progress increases uncertainty.
Every transfer window brings new suitors.
Every strong season strengthens the player’s bargaining position.
Liverpool have already experienced what happens when these situations are allowed to drag on.
Supporters should not have to watch another elite player edge closer to the exit door.
The reality is that top clubs secure the futures of their best players before contract situations become a problem.
They do not wait until panic sets in.
They do not leave themselves vulnerable.
And they certainly do not allow multiple key players to approach the final year of their deals simultaneously.
Liverpool’s new leadership team faces a crucial decision.
If they believe Mac Allister and Szoboszlai are central to the next chapter of the club’s history, then new contracts should be near the top of the agenda.
Because after the Konaté saga, there can be no excuses.
Liverpool simply cannot afford another contract disaster.
