"Only certain people can manage Liverpool" - Pundit questions Reds' Andoni Iraola recruitment decision

Former Premier League star Dean Saunders questions Liverpool's decision to recruit Andoni Iraola as their next first-team manager.

Arne Slot was sacked by Liverpool after a 2-year stint at the club. In his first season, Slot won the Premier League, but the Dutchman struggled in his second season as the coach of the Anfield club.

The Reds finished 5th in the PL table in a season filled with poor performances and injuries. Slot was sacked after the club's poor showing in domestic and European tournaments.

Liverpool are expected to announce former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola as their next manager after he left the PL club at the end of his contract. He led the Cherries to an incredible 6th place finish before leaving the club this summer.

Dean Saunders, who once plied his trade for the Reds, questioned the club's decision to go after the Spanish manager. He insisted the club should go after bigger-name managers before Iraola. Speaking on talkSPORT, he said (via Metro):

"Only certain people can manage Liverpool. If I’m the recruitment team at the Reds and I’ve sacked Slot, they would have thought that this bloke don’t know how to win games every week.

"It’s a disaster if you draw. At a top club the rules are different. You’ve got to win every single game, and you’ve got to know how to do it. You think of people who know how to win football matches and know how to take the game to the opposition. They know how to break the bus down every week; they know how to do it."

He then listed out a bunch of managers he'd have looked to sign before Iraola.

"They can pay the manager whatever they want. I would think, right we’re going to sack Slot who can we get? Jurgen Klopp, can we get Jurgen Klopp back?

"What about Pep Guardiola? Can we get Pep Guardiola? Honestly! If we get any of them two, we’re going to win games and leagues.

Liverpool dealt blow as transfer target agrees to join European rivals: Reports

The Reds have been dealt a blow as transfer target Yan Diomande has reportedly agreed to join Paris Saint-Germain. The Anfield club are reportedly looking to sign a replacement for Mo Salah and were keeping tabs on Diomande. But the Paris club has leapfrogged them in the race to sign the teenager.

Any interested teams would have to pay a reported fee of over £100million to secure his services this summer.
