Liverpool is on the verge of entering a very different era in the dugout – and it is one being shaped very much on Andoni Iraola’s terms.

In the space of just a few whirlwind days the former Bournemouth boss has gone from an interesting name on a shortlist to the man the club’s hierarchy believe can drag the squad into a more aggressive, front‑foot style of football after the decision to move on from Arne Slot.

Talks have accelerated quickly, with a verbal agreement already in place and Liverpool keen to have everything wrapped up and announced before the week is out so the new head coach can start planning pre‑season and, crucially, the summer transfer window.

The club’s sporting structure, led by Richard Hughes, has also played a huge part in getting this close to the finish line.

Hughes was the man who first brought Iraola to England and their excellent relationship has helped smooth negotiations as Liverpool look to move swiftly in a summer that also contains a World Cup and all the logistical headaches that brings.

Ben Jacobs has reported that Andoni Iraola will only sign a two-year deal at his own insistence as that’s how the 43-year-old chooses to do things:

“Andoni Iraola is expected to sign a two-year contract at Liverpool. Verbal terms in place, as reported earlier.”

“Liverpool will now begin formal talks with Bournemouth for backroom staff members Tommy Elphick, Shaun Cooper, and analyst Tom Webber. Clubs have an excellent relationship and an agreement is expected before the week is out. Pablo de la Torre will also join. He is out of contract, so no issues in signing.”

“The short-term contract is at Andoni Iraola’s insistence. It is how the Spaniard operates with all clubs.”

During the 2025/26 campaign, Iraola guided Bournemouth to a historic Europa League qualification while also delivering their highest-ever Premier League points tally with 57.
