The Browns don’t know who their quarterback will be, but HC Todd Monken knows he doesn’t want Brendan Sorsby. The standout from Cincinnati, his off-field issues have complicated his immediate future. The NCAA already denied him eligibility for 2026, but the decision is now going before a judge. In the meanwhile, he could potentially enter the 2026 Supplemental Draft.
Given the Browns’ quarterback situation, they have been one of the most popular teams talking heads connect to Brendan Sorsby. Right now, they’re tossing and turning between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders. One is a player they wished they’d gotten rid of years ago, the other comes with an entourage and limited talent and athletic ability. So why not snoop around another option if it’s available?
“I don’t think we’re in a position to want to go down that road”, Todd Monken said about the Browns’ potential interest in Sorsby, via the team’s website. He clarified that that is his personal position and doesn’t know what GM Andrew Berry thinks. “I like the quarterbacks that we have. I think that’s a slippery slope when you go down that, irrespective of talent, right? In terms of the situation he’s himself in, we all know what that is. He put himself in that situation”.
The “situation” to which everybody refers when discussing Sorsby is the thousands of bets he made as an active college athlete. Among the teams upon which he placed wagers was his own, the habit spanning his entire college career. The general consensus is that is reflects very poor judgement, a terrible trait for a quarterback.
“Again, that’s a question for Andrew and for management”, Monken reiterated regarding the Browns’ interest in Brendan Sorsby. “But from my end of it, kind of a tough angle to go down that road and think that’s going to be your franchise quarterback if he’s ever eligible to even play in the NFL”.
Of course, the odds of the Browns already having a franchise quarterback on the roster are exceedingly low. They thought they were trading for one years ago in Deshaun Watson, but then he was—terrible. And he barely played due to a series of injuries. But now that he is finally healthy again, and arguably not as bad as Shedeur Sanders or Dillon Gabriel, we’re back in the muck.
Last season, Sorsby went 207-for-336 for the Bearcats for 2,800 yards with 27 touchdowns to 5 interceptions. He led the conference in passer rating, though Cincinnati still finished 7-6. Over his college career, he threw for 7,208 yards in 35 games with 60 touchdowns to 18 interceptions.
The Browns have drafted three quarterbacks over the past two seasons, though none earlier than the third round. They drafted Gabriel in the third and then Sanders in the fifth in 2025. This past April, they added Taylen Green in the sixth round. Deshaun Watson is the carryover, going into his fifth season with the team. Would Brendan Sorsby be the best of this group—if he were ever eligible to play? It’s a question Todd Monken hopes the Browns never put him in a position to answer.
