Andoni Iraola explains why he only signs two-year contracts

Andoni Iraola is expected to sign a two-year contract at Liverpool this week. The Spaniard is widely tipped to be Arne Slot’s successor at Anfield.

The Spaniard will look to bring Timmy Elphick, Shaun Cooper, and fitness coach Pablo La Torre to Anfield if he takes charge.

Tommy Elphick is most associated with captaining Bournemouth on their journey from League One to the Premier League, before returning in 2021 as a coach and later being promoted to Iraola’s assistant, a role he kept despite turning down the Bristol City manager’s job last week.

Shaun Cooper is another Bournemouth stalwart, having racked up over 200 appearances for the club before moving into the academy system and eventually progressing onto the first‑team staff.

Pablo de la Torre, meanwhile, arrived at Bournemouth in 2023 as fitness coach, following Iraola from Rayo Vallecano.

There has also been some questions around why Andoni Iraola is only signing a two-year contract at Liverpool. However, in the Spaniard’s own words, he wants to earn his place at whatever club he works at:

“The only time I have signed for two years is here at Bournemouth. I don’t want to continue at a club just because I have a contract,” he said to the BBC back in 2025.

I want to continue because both sides are happy and they want to continue together. “The manager’s case is as important as the players’ cases, because at the end, you have to get the results.”

“I could have whatever contract I have, but if I don’t get the results, in three or four months I will be in danger. “So I try to focus on the short-term – do your job, get your results and then normally everything is fine. In Spain, it’s probably different – with Rayo, I used to renew a lot of times after the season, but I understand it is different in England.”

It’s been widely reported that the Spaniard could be officially announced this week.
