"I was told..."- Journalist makes big claim regarding Liverpool's approach for Andoni Iraola

**Liverpool spoke to Jurgen Klopp in order to get his thoughts on appointing Andoni Iraola as their next manager, according to a new claim.**

The Spaniard is replacing Arne Slot in the dugout at Anfield, in what is an exciting and much-needed appointment, following such a poor season in all competitions.

Iraola guided Bournemouth to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League in 2025/26, playing eye-catching football along the way, and the hope is that he can be an inspirational figure in charge of Liverpool for many years to come.

Writing on [_X_](https://x.com/JanAageFjortoft/status/2061864674870607947?s=20) on Tuesday, journalist and former striker Jan Aage Fjortoft claimed that the Reds spoke with legendary former manager Klopp to get his take on Iraola before hiring him:

_“I said I was told that they talked to Klopp, and that makes sense. Liverpool and other good managed clubs will get input/references from all resources around. What they were told I have no idea.”_

**Speaking to Jurgen Klopp a shrewd decision by Liverpool**

-----------------------------------------------------------

Given Klopp’s iconic standing at Liverpool and world-class ability as a manager, it is good to see that they reportedly confided in him when it came to assessing Iraola.

The German is [clearly a big admirer](https://www.thisisanfield.com/2026/06/jurgen-klopp-had-high-praise-for-andoni-iraola/) of the 43-year-old and his approach to the game, having lauded his playing style back in January 2024, saying:

_“That’s real coaching I have to say, and he found a way to set this team up and they have a really good mix. They play football, they find direction in the right moments, they use Dom Solanke in a sensational way: the support he gets from the centre, from the wings. The way they defend (is) really good, really compact. So that’s proper.”_

As is the case with any manager, there is risk when it comes to Liverpool appointing Iraola, including his high-octane style being able to thrive when playing three games a week, potentially leading to injuries.

But he stands out as the most exciting to take the team forward, and even if things don’t work out in the end, Reds supporters are likely to be entertained again, which so many crave after such a dull finish to life under Slot.
