Arne Slot would reportedly be open to taking a national team manager job so soon after his Liverpool exit.
The Dutchman delivered the dream start by clinching the Premier League title in his first season.
But a chaotic and underwhelming title defence – ending with a fifth-place finish and early exits in key competitions – ultimately cost him his job as Fenway Sports Group opted for what they described as a “change of direction.”
Parting ways with Slot is not coming cheap. Reports in the Netherlands suggest Liverpool will have to pay around €8 million to terminate his deal a year early.
De Telegraaf’s Marcel van der Kraan has revealed that it was a big shock to Arne Slot when he was informed of his dismissal:
“Now and again, we liaise and he gave me the impression very much that he was absolutely going to be the manager of Liverpool in the new season,” Van der Kraan said to talkSPORT. “And that Saturday, I think, was an absolute thunder in a clear blue sky for Arne.
“And I spoke to him briefly on the Sunday as well…and I think he was still recovering from the absolute blow that this was.”
“The Premier League – high tempo – really does demand something special. And at the same time, we see that very few Dutch guys make it as a manager in the Premier League.”
Van der Kraan then revealed that Slot would be open to taking over the reigns at the Dutch national team should the long-serving Ronald Koeman decide to depart after the FIFA 2026 World Cup:
“If Ronald Koeman steps down after the World Cup…there is a vacancy at the Dutch national team,” Van der Kraan noted. “I think Arne Slot is very, very much up for that; he’s probably the ideal candidate.”
“He can play his Dutch style of football – the passing, attacking style, whatever you call it. I think the Dutch would be happy to have him.”
Ronald Koeman’s contract as the head coach of the Netherlands national team ends on July 31, 2026.
