His logic goes beyond personal pride and gets into practical football territory. A coordinator who wanted the top job, staying under a head coach he wasn’t chosen over, creates genuine locker room problems.
Players who spent three years buying into Schwartz’s system don’t automatically redirect their loyalty overnight. Schwartz recognized that his presence could have been just as damaging for Monken as it was uncomfortable for himself. Leaving was the professional move, even if it came with consequences.
For what it’s worth, Schwartz wasn’t torching the organization on his way out the door. He was direct, measured and completely clear-eyed about the situation he found himself in.
