The NYC Department of Sanitation's homepage has a search bar, and when you type “Spurs,” it autofills to “San Antonio Spurs.” If you click that, it leads to a page that reads, “Go New York, go New York, GO! Here's hoping for a clean sweep!”

The 2026 NBA Finals series is a rematch of the 1999 series. In 1999, the Spurs beat the Knicks in five games, leading to the franchise's first of five championships. While they haven't won a title since 2014, New York's drought is even longer, dating back to 1973.
These two teams have had different roads to the NBA Finals. The Knicks come into the Finals after winning 11 games in a row. They haven't lost since Thursday, Apr. 23, in Game 3 of their series against the Atlanta Hawks.
Since then, they won three in a row — all in blowout fashion — to close out the Hawks series. They then swept the Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers to advance to the Finals.
Meanwhile, the Spurs have yet to sweep an opponent in the postseason. They beat the Portland Trail Blazers in five, and then they outlasted the Minnesota Timberwolves, who took them to six games, in the Western Conference Semifinals.
They then went seven games against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals. While they entered the series as the underdog, given that OKC finished as the top seed in the West, the Spurs won the series, winning the last two games to seal the deal.
