Joao Pedro is in line for a pay rise at Chelsea, despite a difficult season for the club. Joao Pedro was a standout player for the Blues as they missed out on European football.

City AM reports that Chelsea operate a salary system that is heavily tied to both team performance and achievements. It means that base salaries are lower than rival clubs, but pay is significantly boosted by bonuses.

That’s tied to trophies and Champions League qualification, but individual achievements are also taken into account.

A 10th-place finish and a failure to qualify for European competitions could therefore impact the salary earned by members of the Chelsea squad. Joao Pedro's individual performances, including 20 goals and nine assists in all competitions, could see him earn more.

Speaking about the striker back in March, former Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior made his feelings clear. “I think his hold-up play, the energy he puts into the team in terms of his press, his movement, his goal with the left foot is world-class,” he said.

“The finish is magnificent. But actually, I'm really, really delighted with his two tap-ins that he got. He was in the right place at the right time.”

The striker is attracting interest from Barcelona this summer, but Chelsea have no intention of letting him leave Stamford Bridge.

His surprise omission from the Brazil World Cup squad will give new manager Xabi Alonso extra time to work with him over the summer.

The Spaniard takes charge in preparation for the new season, with him replacing interim head coach Calum McFarlane in the hot seat. Having been appointed as manager, the new boss is expected to have a big say in transfers.

A raft of changes are expected in the summer in terms of the playing squad. Reports on Wednesday claim that the Blues will ‘push’ to sign Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers.

Chelsea could find the lack of European football next season a potential stumbling block in attracting players and beating off competition for signings. The Blues are no strangers to being active in the transfer windows, though.

Over the last five years, Chelsea have a net spend of £729.6 million. That’s the highest in the Premier League ahead of Arsenal (£576.9m) and Manchester United (£543m).
