How unreported Myles Garrett trade condition could give Browns extra first-round pick from Rams

The Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Rams sent shockwaves through the NFL by partaking in a Myles Garrett trade.

With Garrett heading west and Jared Verse with three future L.A. draft picks going to Cleveland, many believed the trade was fully finished. However, there is a sneaky clause in the trade details that could turn a third-round pick from the Rams into a first-rounder for the Browns.

Mary Kay Cabot, a Cleveland beat reporter, shared what has to happen for the Browns to land a second first-round pick in that trade.

Here's how Cleveland could land an additional first-round pick from their blockbuster move.

Myles Garrett trade details

On June 1, just hours before A.J. Brown was finally traded to the New England Patriots, the Rams decided to have some fun on their own. They shocked the NFL world by trading for one of the top defensive players in the entire league.

Here are the full trade details from Monday's trade:

Rams receive: EDGE Myles Garrett

Browns receive: EDGE Jared Verse, 2027 first-round pick, 2028 second-round pick, 2029 third-round pick

With Garrett heading to the City of Angels, fellow edge rusher Jared Verse and a significant draft haul are going east to Cleveland. That collection of picks includes the Rams' 2027 first-round pick, their 2028 second-rounder, and 2029 third-rounder.

Explaining Myles Garrett trade condition

The Garrett trade did have some subsurface details. While the Browns did land three draft picks, one of them being a first-rounder, another could be heading to the Dawg Pound. According to Mary Kay Cabot, a Browns beat reporter, Cleveland could receive another first-round pick if a certain situation presents itself.

If the Rams decide to trade Garrett back to the AFC North, the Browns' division, Cleveland's 2029 third-round pick from L.A. will turn into a first-round pick. While it is unlikely the Rams would ever do that, they have all the more reason to abstain.

Browns draft picks 2029

This offseason marks the first time that NFL teams can trade for picks in the 2029 NFL Draft, which is now two drafts away. Cleveland took advantage of this by tacking on a third-round pick in three years. This third-round pick from the Rams, however, can turn into a first-rounder if L.A. trades Garrett back to the AFC North.

As a rebuilding team, the Browns organization is known for frequently adding draft capital via trades, so it's no surprise that they added a pick that will become a player in 2029.

Here is Cleveland's current list of assets for the 2029 NFL Draft.
