Liverpool desperate to complete £103m transfer before World Cup begins

There have been mixed reports this week on the direction RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande will take this summer, with PSG and Liverpool both heavily linked with signing him.

In 2025-26, Diomande was directly involved in 23 goals, scoring 13 times while providing 10 assists. His stock increased dramatically this season, given his direct and explosive style of play.

While Leipzig only signed Diomande last summer for €20m (£17.2m), the German club is seeking somewhere in the range of €100m and €120m (£86m-£103m) to sell him this summer. That’s a dramatic increase.

Liverpool are seeking multiple wingers this summer. Luis Diaz wasn’t replaced after he joined Bayern Munich in 2025, while the mammoth task of replacing Mohamed Salah means the Reds are in need of a potential superstar on the right flank.

Latest Yan Diomande transfer news features battle between PSG and Liverpool

Journalist Santi Aouna claimed in a report for Foot Mercato that Diomande has greenlit a move to PSG or Liverpool. Reportedly, ‘several meetings have taken place between PSG and Leipzig’ while the player is also said to be ‘tempted’ by Liverpool.

According to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, the Ivorian attacker has not given any indication that he will join PSG or Liverpool as of yet.

He reports: “Yan Diomande has not given his commitment to either Paris Saint-Germain or Liverpool despite reports. Both clubs want him, as revealed.

“Liverpool are doing everything they can to complete a deal before the World Cup.

“RB Leipzig remain relaxed. Oliver Mintzlaff, Jürgen Klopp and Marcel Schäfer are convinced that Diomande will stay for at least another year and sign a new contract on improved terms.”

The Ivory Coast national team play its first game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on 15 June which gives Liverpool a short time to complete a summer transfer, but any movement on this will only come after Liverpool appoint Andoni Iraola.

Liverpool have several transfer needs to meet once Andoni Iraola appointment is made

Signing Diomande is an exciting thought, but there are several key areas of the squad that need attention as well.

Liverpool desperately need a new right back after reports that Conor Bradley’s knee injury is far worse than reports first suggested. Jeremie Frimpong was signed last summer to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, but the Dutchman struggled in his first season under compatriot Arne Slot. There is hope he will find success under Iraola.

Signing a defensive midfielder is a priority – or at least it should be – with a replacement for Fabinho yet to arrive despite his 2023 exit from Anfield.

Centre-back is another area of the team that needs attention after Ibrahima Konate’s free agent exit this summer. Jarell Quansah is another player who wasn’t replaced when he left the club in 2025.
