Manchester United interest meets€60m demand from Porto–Winger’s value can rise further

Manchester United’s reported interest in Porto winger William Gomes comes with an obvious complication. The Portuguese club already have a price in mind. Moreover, it is one that could test even the biggest Premier League spenders.

The Brazilian has become one of Porto’s most valuable assets after an impressive first full season in Europe. His performances have already attracted attention from England. For example, Newcastle United and Chelsea have both been linked with him in recent months.

Newcastle are even reported to have submitted an offer. Meanwhile, Chelsea were among the clubs assessing the best way to start a negotiation.

Now Manchester United have entered the picture as well. And news from Portugal claims the price is set.

Porto make stance clear

According to Correio da Manhã, Manchester United are among the clubs showing interest in William Gomes. Atlético Madrid and other sides from ‘the top of the Premier League’ are also interested.

However, the report states Porto are only willing to discuss a sale for a fee around €60m (£51.6m). This is despite the player’s release clause being set at €80m (£68.8m).

That figure is said to have already been communicated through contacts with agents and intermediaries. As a result, interested clubs are aware of the level required to start serious negotiations.

The report also claims the valuation is already being viewed as steep by potential suitors. Even when taking into account William Gomes’ age and potential, it remains high.

Why Porto are not rushing

William Gomes is still only 20 and Porto believe his value could rise further.

The club signed him from São Paulo in January 2025 for €9m (£7.7m), acquiring 80% of his economic rights. Since then, his stock has risen considerably. This followed a campaign that has delivered 13 goals and two assists in 45 appearances.

Porto’s confidence is also linked to next season. Club officials reportedly believe another year in Portugal, combined with exposure in the Champions League, could increase his market value even further.

Porto could make future transfer easier

Another factor involves São Paulo’s remaining stake. The Brazilian club still own 20% of William Gomes’ rights. Therefore, they would receive a significant share of any future transfer fee.

Correio da Manhã reports Porto would like to acquire that remaining percentage before any eventual sale. Doing so would give them greater control over negotiations and allow them to maximise income from a future transfer.

As for Manchester United, Newcastle and Chelsea, they know Porto are willing to sell, but only at a price they believe reflects both William Gomes’ current level and the possibility that he becomes even more valuable over the next 12 months.
