This Anfield summer is starting to feel like a clearout. Salah gone. Robertson gone. Konate gone. Slot gone. And now Ruben Peeters has confirmed he is leaving too. For anyone following Liverpool news closely, each new exit this week has been harder to take than the last.
Ruben Peeters bids Anfield farewell after two seasons
As reported by The Mirror, Ruben Peeters confirmed his exit via an emotional LinkedIn post. “After two unforgettable seasons at Liverpool FC, it is time to say goodbye,” he wrote. The 34-year-old Belgian joined in 2024, arriving from Feyenoord as part of Arne Slot’s backroom team. Once Slot was sacked, Peeters’ exit was always going to follow.
Ruben Peeters brought a strong reputation with him to Anfield. At Feyenoord, as reported by The Athletic, the squad stayed above 90% player availability for three straight seasons. He did this through periodisation, a method that maps out individual training loads and recovery time for each player. The report mentioned Liverpool had seen 21 players sidelined in 2023/24. In his first season, only 11 senior players missed matches, combining for 129 games missed. The Reds went on to win the Premier League title that year.
His second season was a different story. Injuries rose by 65.9%, with 16 players out for a combined 214 games, as reported by This is Anfield. Slot summed it up bluntly at the end of the campaign. Andoni Iraola, who took Bournemouth to sixth and into Europe, is now the clear favourite to take over.
What Liverpool needs next- and who might provide it?
Whoever steps into Ruben Peeters’ role has a big job ahead. Iraola plays an intense, high-pressure brand of football. The Cherries did it well, but once a week. Liverpool do it three times a week across the Premier League, Europe, and cups. That is a much bigger ask.
As reported by Goal.com, Spanish fitness coach Pablo de la Torre is the frontrunner to fill the gap. He has followed Iraola from AEK Larnaca to Rayo Vallecano to Bournemouth. He is expected to be one of the very few staff Iraola brings to Anfield. After a season defined by injuries, this hire could matter as much as any signing.
The Reds have Champions League football secured and a title win still fresh in memory. But the rebuild is real, and it is only just getting started.
