Real Madrid have reportedly identified Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori as a potential summer target after Jose Mourinho requested further defensive reinforcements ahead of next season.
The Spanish giants are already moving to strengthen their backline and have agreed a deal to sign Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries.
Attention has now reportedly turned towards Calafiori, with Mourinho said to be a strong admirer of the Italy international’s versatility.
According to reports in Spain, the incoming Real Madrid boss has asked club officials to explore the possibility of bringing the Arsenal defender to the Santiago Bernabeu.
Calafiori is capable of operating both as a centre-back and a left-back, a quality that is believed to appeal greatly to Mourinho as he prepares to reshape Madrid’s defence.
The 24-year-old joined Arsenal from Bologna in the summer of 2024 after impressing in Serie A and helping Italy reach the knockout stages of Euro 2024.
The Gunners invested an initial €44 million to secure his signature, with additional bonuses potentially taking the overall package higher.
While flashes of his quality have been evident throughout his first two seasons in North London, injuries have disrupted his progress and prevented him from fully establishing himself as an automatic starter.
Calafiori made 36 appearances across all competitions during the 2025-26 campaign, contributing one goal and three assists as Arsenal ended their 22-year wait for a Premier League title.
However, he found opportunities harder to come by during the latter stages of the season.
The Italian remained on the bench throughout Arsenal’s Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain despite being fit enough to make the squad.
That has inevitably fuelled speculation about his long-term role at the club.
Calafiori has previously spoken about preferring to play in central defence, although Mikel Arteta has often utilised him at left-back due to the balance and flexibility he offers the team.
At this stage there is no indication that Arsenal are willing to sell.
The defender remains highly regarded within the club and is still viewed as an important part of Arteta’s squad heading into next season.
Nevertheless, interest from Real Madrid is unlikely to go unnoticed.
