The Pittsburgh Steelers loaded up at wide receiver this offseason, trading for Michael Pittman Jr. and drafting Germie Bernard. That position has been a weakness for them for the past few years, and they aimed to change that. However, their presence figures to eat up opportunities in the wide receiver room, and that might not be good news for Roman Wilson. He’s struggled to find his footing during his short time in the NFL. Nick Herbig is confident that Wilson will turn things around, though.
“We talk about playing with your teammates from college, but we went to high school together,” Herbig said Wednesday via the team’s website. “We were teenagers, and now, we’re in the league.
“We’re grown. We’ve gotta handle business. And just seeing him mature as not just a player but a person and seeing how he approaches business and attacks the game, I think he’s gonna have a great year. Special player.”
Wilson was the Steelers’ third-round pick in 2024, and they hoped that he would help mitigate the loss of Diontae Johnson. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Wilson missed basically his entire rookie season with injuries.
While Wilson was healthy last year, he still barely made an impact. He played in 13 games and caught only 12 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns. He even got benched near the end of the year, only returning to the lineup because of DK Metcalf’s suspension. Even then, Wilson still didn’t really do anything.
Herbig sees big things in Wilson’s future, but this season could be an even bigger uphill battle for the wideout. Pittman will be ahead of him on the depth chart, and Bernard could pass him up, too.
Also, Aaron Rodgers is back in Pittsburgh, and it didn’t seem like he and Wilson had great chemistry last year. Maybe things will change in their second year together, but Wilson might have to show Rodgers a lot in order to rebuild their connection.
Wilson’s slate is likely wiped clean with Pittsburgh’s new coaching staff. However, he’ll still have to earn every opportunity. Otherwise, his time with the Steelers could come to an end sooner rather than later. He’ll only have one year left on his rookie contract after this season. Wilson needs to show the team something in 2026.
