Robert Horry pumps the brakes on Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama talk

For the first time since 2014, the San Antonio Spurs have advanced to the NBA Finals, where they will take on the New York Knicks. As fate would have it, the last time the Knicks were in the NBA Finals was 1999, and they were defeated by the Spurs.

San Antonio will be hoping for a similar outcome as they seek their first NBA championship in 12 years. Former first overall draft selection Victor Wembanyama has been as good as advertised so far in the NBA postseason, having averaged 23.2 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.5 blocks, and 2.7 assists per game while shooting 51.0% from the field.

A former sharpshooter in his own right was Robert Horry, who helped the Spurs win a pair of NBA titles in 2005 and 2007. And now, he is pumping the brakes a bit on Wembanyama becoming the new face of the NBA. As the former Spurs veteran put it, their young star should make it happen himself.

“I’m not saying he’s not great, he’s a great defensive player, but all I’m saying is they trying to make him the be all now,” Horry said via NBA Courtside on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Like he is God’s gift to basketball. I’m just saying give him time. Give him time. Let him mature. Let him take it. Don’t give it to him. Let him take it.”

During the regular season, Wembanyama averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, shooting 51.2% from the field while appearing in 64 total contests. He and the Spurs face the Knicks in Game 1 of the NBA Finals starting on Wednesday evening from San Antonio.
