Billy Joel drops cold ‘New York State of Mind’ hype video before NBA Finals

Billy Joel is giving New York Knicks fans some merch to support the New York team for the NBA Finals.

The music icon shared a video of his partnership with Sportiqe for their “New York State of Mind” collection — a reference to his iconic song of the same name that soundtracks the video. In the video, there was a montage of New York City subways, bridges, and sites like the Statue of Liberty. Towards the end of the video, a grey T-shirt is shown with “New York State of Mind” in large orange letters and the Knicks logo below it. Fans who want to shop the collection can do so online and in-store at the NBA Shop NYC.

The last time the Knicks made it to the NBA Finals was in 1999, and coincidentally, they faced the Spurs. This time around, the Spurs are looking to avenge the 1999 loss, which was the first franchise win for the San Antonio team.

Prior to the hiring of Mike Brown to replace coach Tom Thibodeau, who led the Knicks to close to the NBA Finals, it was an obvious task that Brown had to take the Knicks one step further.

“He was put in a tough situation with a lot of expectations,” said Josh Hart per NBA.com. “But he’s handled that unbelievably. He’s coaching us in his way, his style. He’s taking input from everybody. His ability to lead us to adapt to things has been great. That’s just the kind of person he is.”

Brown had faith in the team from the beginning but wanted his mindset to stay clear amid the outside noise.

“When I took the job, I thought about [the championship possibilities of this group],” Brown recently said. “But going through this process, one of the things that I’m trying really hard to do — and trying really hard to make sure our team does from the top down — is to stay present.”

The Knicks take on the San Antonio Spurs at 8:30 ET at the Frost Bank Center for Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
