Adam Silver drops huge update decision on Seattle, Las Vegas NBA expansion

The NBA's expansion plans for Seattle and Las Vegas remain in progress, with the final decision to be made by the end of the calendar year.

The NBA's expansion plans remain in progress, with a final decision about to be made by the end of this year, league commissioner Adam Silver told reporters at his end-of-season press conference.

Both cities of Las Vegas and Seattle are at the forefront of the NBA's domestic expansion, with the league already generating franchise ownership interests.

“Discussions are ongoing,” Silver said Wednesday. “I think everyone knows at this point we’re focused on Las Vegas and Seattle. There are multiple groups interested in both cities. We are in discussions with them. The timeline, as I've said before, it's not a foregone conclusion that we will expand either in one city or both cities.

“But what we've told all interested parties is our anticipation our board will make a decision by the end of this calendar year.”

The NBA Board of Governors has already approved the start of a formal process to explore expansion last March.

Two potential new franchises are targeted to begin their play in the 2028–29 season.
