New Orleans RB Alvin Kamara makes surprise appearance at Saints OTAs amid trade rumors

METAIRIE, La. (WLOX) — For the first time in more than seven years, New Orleans Saints runningback Alvin Kamara was in attendance for OTAs on Wednesday.

The franchise’s all-time leading rusher showed up at the facility unannounced, claiming he made the decision to attend the optional training period late last night.

“I called my mom. I was talking to my daughter,” explained Kamara. “She was like, ‘What’re you doing?’ I said, ‘I think I’m going to go to my other job.’ She was like, ‘You’re going to work work?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, work work.’... It’s good to be in here. Just a little energy, a little smile.”

“[I was] surprised,” explained head coach Kellen Moore. “I mean, I hadn’t had any conversation with him as far as him coming, but it’s awesome, you know? This portion of the NFL offseason obviously is voluntary, so historically, his has been a little bit of a different path than this, but it’s great to see him.”

After signing Travis Etienne in the offseason, the Saints are unlikely to enter the regular season with Kamara’s $10.5 million cap hit. If New Orleans can’t come to an agreement on a restructured contract, Kamara is a prime candidate to be moved or even cut prior to Week 1.

“I don’t know the business contractual side of this thing,” said Moore. “I don’t think necessarily anything’s been done there, but, you know, it was good to see him. Obviously, a lot of times this time of the year, he’s not always here, similar to last year. But it was good to see him and [I’m] excited to kind of spend a little bit of time to talk with him and just kind of see where he’s all at.”

“I’m chilling,” said Kamara. “Right now, the plan is I’m still in the contract here. So, I’m a Saint. We’ll see what — if anything — happens, then we’ll go from there."
