The loss spoiled what appeared to be a promising start for San Antonio, which opened the game with a 20-5 run and fed off an energetic home crowd throughout the first half. The Spurs maintained control for much of the night before New York erased the deficit and tied the game entering the fourth quarter.
Jalen Brunson delivered the game’s defining stretch, scoring a game-high 30 points with 13 coming in the fourth quarter. He hit a contested corner three-pointer with just over two minutes remaining to put New York ahead for the rest of regulation. Karl-Anthony Towns chipped in 18 points and 12 rebounds, while OG Anunoby scored 17 points and Josh Hart grabbed 15 rebounds.
Wembanyama finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds in his NBA Finals debut but shot 6-for-21 from the field as New York’s physical defense challenged his touches. The Spurs now enter Game 2 trailing 1-0 after losing home-court advantage in the opening game of the series.
