Man City remain “in talks with Chelsea” about a compensation package for manager Enzo Maresca, according to Sky Sports journalists Lyall Thomas and Kaveh Solhekol.

The Italian parted ways with the Blues at the start of January, but he still had three and a half years left on his contract at the time.

It is not clear what conditions were stipulated with regards to taking up other jobs, and it seems the discussions are in the hands of lawyers.

Even so, the two Sky reporters claim that City are hoping to have an “agreement this week”, enabling Maresca to take the reins at the Etihad Stadium.

Maresca has had conversations with Guardiola

At this stage, it doesn’t look like there is any danger that the club’s succession plan will come undone by legal issues.

Maresca is believed to be already fully integrated into the decision-making process. The Athletic have claimed that the 46-year-old has talked to Pep Guardiola about the squad.

The pair have worked together before, so it isn’t at all surprising that Maresca is taking as much advice from his predecessor as possible.

Could Man City take anyone else from Chelsea?

Yesterday, we wrote a piece assessing whether Maresca would raid his former team for new signings. Four players have been mentioned as possible targets.

At the moment, there is no guarantee that any of them will make the same journey up to Manchester from London.

Maresca will, though, be keen to strengthen specific positions. The departure of captain Bernardo Silva will be keenly felt, so it is almost certain that one or more central midfielders will be signed. A right-back could also be on the agenda.
