Shaun Wright-Phillips Issues Verdict On Whether Man City Will Break Their Transfer Record For“Fantastic Player”

Ex-Man City star Shaun Wright-Phillips has raised doubts about his former club matching Nottingham Forest’s valuation for Elliot Anderson

The Cityzens have already had one bid turned down for the England international, with Forest said to be wanting close to the £115m Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo.

It means that Anderson could end up becoming City’s club record transfer if they do match his reported valuation. Asked by Betway whether he thinks the midfielder is worth the money, Wright-Phillips replied:

“I think he’s a fantastic player, but the problem you’ve got in football is owners are now slapping those price tags on players, whether they think they’ve worth it or not. It’s just a matter of this is how much we want for him.”

“But it’s an interesting situation because the most City have spent on a player is £100m, and that was a one-off anyway. It would surprise me to see any team in England go in at that price. But he will be a sought-after player by all the top clubs because he’s that good at what he does.”

Anderson does have other suitors

As Wright-Phillips mentions, City are by no means the only team who would be keen on signing the 23-year-old.

Rivals Manchester United are known to be very interested in Anderson too, and Forest may be playing on that to ensure they get top dollar for their player.

Man City do have alternatives in mind

While Director of Football Hugo Viana and prospective new head coach Enzo Maresca agree that Anderson is the top target to strengthen the midfield, it is believed that they have discussed other names.

Both Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali and Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez are also on the club’s radar, but neither midfielder would be cheaper to sign.

Tonali’s asking price is said to be £100m, while multiple reports claim that Chelsea are hoping to get £120m for Fernandez.
