Yan Diomande performs dramatic Liverpool transfer U-turn amid talk of £87m deal

Yan Diomande's name will be on the lips of lots of football supporters this summer, with the teen star likely to be one of the transfer stories of the summer.

The 19-year-old has enjoyed a stellar season with RB Leipzig, scoring 13 goals and laying on 10 assists from the wing as the German side qualified for next season's Champions League by finishing third in the Bundesliga.

Twenty-four goal involvements in 36 appearances is no mean feat for a teenager trying to make his way in the game and his impressive form has led to a number of clubs across Europe sitting up and taking notice.

Leipzig will hope that by qualifying for the Champions League next season, they can keep Diomande at the club or at least another season, but if not they will demand a huge price from anyone hoping to sign him this summer.

It is understood that the German side will demand a fee in the region of €100million (£87million) to let him go this summer.

Liverpool are one of the clubs chasing his signature, with the Reds in need of reinforcements in the wide areas. Mohamed Salah has left the club following the termination of his contract, while there are question marks over Cody Gakpo and Federico Chiesa's futures at Anfield.

Liverpool will be in the market for at least one wide forward and Diomande is a "leading candidate" to sign for Liverpool, according to GIVEMESPORT senior football correspondent Ben Jacobs.

Speaking on the Market Madness podcast, he said: "He is a leading candidate for Liverpool to replace Mo Salah. Leipzig are hoping Diomande could still sign a new deal, but no new deal has been agreed yet and as a consequence Liverpool and PSG are the main clubs moving for him."

It had looked as if Liverpool would have a key advantage in signing Diomande this summer when he revealed that he was a fan of the club as a boy and that he wanted to "play at Anfield". In a TikTok live stream he said: "I want to play at Anfield. I want to play for Liverpool. I’m a big fan of Liverpool.”

He did later row back on those comments slightly by saying it was his father who supported Liverpool and dreamt of seeing his son play at Anfield and now Diomande has made a complete u-turn on wanting to sign for Liverpool, now PSG are in the race to sign him.

Speaking to l'Equipe, he said: "Paris Saint-Germain is a team I’ve loved since I was a child. My father supports Paris Saint-Germain, and it’s a team I admire as a football fan.

“It would be a pleasure for me to come and play here with one of the biggest clubs. It’s always a pleasure to come here because, with French being spoken, I think adapting wouldn’t be difficult. But why not?"
