All you need to know about Manchester United's transfer plans in the centre of midfield...

Manchester United have got the first piece of the jigsaw in their midfield rebuild after agreeing a deal worth up to £38.3million for Atalanta midfielder Ederson.

The 26-year-old will sign a four-year contract with the option of a further year, but he still has to undergo a medical and the deal will only be formally completed early next month.

United want to sign at least one more midfielder, and it could be two if they manage to sell Manuel Ugarte. Galatasaray remain interested in the Uruguay international.

Elliot Anderson was the club's top target in that position and was seen as an ideal replacement for Casemiro, but he prefers a move to Manchester City, who have had a bid rejected by Nottingham Forest.

Mateus Fernandes is another player of interest. The 21-year-old has been relegated with West Ham and United are keen, but the Hammers will need to drop their sizeable price tag.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez insisted Aurelien Tchouameni wouldn't be leaving the club earlier this week. The France international is another player United like.

Carlos Baleba was a target last summer, only for United to baulk at Brighton's £100million asking price, and doing a deal with the Seagulls will be a challenge again during this window.

One player staying at Old Trafford is Bruno Fernandes. United officials made it clear earlier this year they were desperate for him to stay and with the club back in the Champions League, he is happy to do so.

As the Manchester Evening News reported last month, there are no plans to open talks with Fernandes over a new contract at the moment. He effectively has two years left on his deal and talks won't take place over the summer.
