EA Sports officially announced Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams as the Madden NFL 27 cover athlete on Wednesday, making him the first Bears player in the franchise's history to appear on the game.
The deluxe edition features Williams in his signature "Iceman" celebration pose, with custom nail art bearing the NFL shield, the Bears logo, the Chicago flag, and a tribute to John Madden himself. The announcement drew celebration in Chicago and immediate controversy everywhere else.
Baton Rouge rapper Boosie Badazz was already in the middle of that conversation before the official reveal. Addressing the backlash his earlier comments generated, Boosie said his DMs had been flooded with angry messages and stood by his position.
"They're going off on my damn DMs. They're mad because the truth hurts," Boosie said. "I come up under Tecmo but I never thought in a million years that I would see a Madden cover with one of their best players with his fingernails painted. A game that sold to billions of little boys. What kind of message are they sending to these little boys?"
He framed the issue as a parenting question.
"As parents, how much do they have to do for us to say 'that's not right'? Us daddies gotta go tell these boys that we got, raising them to be men, 'That's wrong, son.'"
Boosie also directed similar criticism at the NBA in late May, posting that the league should ban nail polish following Jared McCain's rising profile.
What Caleb Williams actually said about the nail art and what it means to him
Williams has addressed the nail polish repeatedly and the explanation is specific. In a Teen Vogue interview tied to the Madden announcement, he described what was on his nails for the shoot.
Boosie addressed the backlash he's been receiving over his comments about Caleb Williams, saying his DMs are full of people upset with him but claiming they're only mad because “the truth hurts.” 👀

"I had a Chicago flag. I had the Chicago Bears' 'C.' In respects to the legend John Madden in EA Sports and as a coach, I had him painted on my nails. I had the NFL shield, the best organization and one of the most historic organizations."
He also explained the broader origin of the practice.
"I've been painting my nails for about six years now. It's been a part of my career because I've always wanted to be true to myself."
Williams' mother is a professional nail technician, which he has cited as part of the inspiration, according to Fox News. He has also used nail art to raise awareness for suicide prevention, domestic violence, and various causes during his career.
