The Pittsburgh Steelers finally signed S Darnell Savage to a one-year contract a few days ago and now we know the details related to that deal.
According to the latest NFLPA update, Savage signed a veteran benefit contract that includes a minimum base salary for his credited seasons played in the amount of $1.3 million. Savage also received the maximum signing bonus allowed as part of a qualifying benefit contract in the amount of $187,500. That signing bonus is the only guaranteed money in the contract.
Savage’s 2026 salary cap charge is listed at $1,262,500, and that is discounted as part of the veteran contract benefit. Savage’s cap charge also enters the Steelers’ Rule of 51 total, mainly because of the signing bonus included in the deal. The Steelers used just $187,500 of their 2026 salary cap space when signing Savage.
Savage joining the team comes on the heels of months of waiting for him to do so as it was on March 10 that the first report surfaced that he had agreed to terms with the Steelers. It is not clear why it took nearly three months before he ultimately signed his one-year contract.
Savage was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Maryland and has since also played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Washington Commanders, and Buffalo Bills.
Savage has registered 371 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 10 interceptions, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and 41 passes defensed in 97 career regular-season games. Savage has started 83 regular-season games over seven NFL seasons.
