Almost immediately after Brandon Aiyuk made headlines for all the wrong reasons yet again, some Washington Commanders fans were calling on the club to turn their attention to another target. Specifically, free-agent wide receiver Stefon Diggs.
This would be an emotional homecoming for Diggs, who hails from the region. The veteran has some baggage himself, but he also made no secret of his desire to at least speak with Washington about the possibility. Some even drew conclusions that this would be his preferred destination.
General manager Adam Peters hasn't made a move as yet, eager to see if the young pass-catchers behind Terry McLaurin can step up. It might also mean the interest is one-sided, but there is no telling for certain right now.
Stefon Diggs is open to anything, including a Commanders homecoming
Diggs was seen leaving a workout and inevitably asked about the future, especially as it pertained to the Commanders. The former Maryland standout reaffirmed that he's open to anything, but he didn't sound very sure if Washington was a legitimate possibility.
Obviously, Diggs is not going to say much. He's keeping all options on the table and doesn't want to burn bridges anymore. But if the chance came to join Washington, he would no doubt seriously consider it.
Whether this feeling is mutual remains the big question that nobody knows the answer to right now.
The Commanders are reportedly looking for help at receiver. That could be the case even if one or two break out behind McLaurin. Aiyuk is the hot name, but he's no sure thing by any stretch. Diggs is available now and was highly productive last season — two things Jayden Daniels' former college teammate at Arizona State was not.
Diggs and Aiyuk are not the only options. They are the two most touted, but there is no real substance attached. The Commanders have more faith in the wideouts currently under contract than the consensus, but Peters also has the cash to spend to strengthen the ranks if he believes it can help Washington's bounce-back chances.
The rumors are swirling. Diggs is biding his time, staying in shape while waiting for the right offer to present itself. Another team will come calling at some stage. It's just a matter of when and who.
It could be the Commanders. It could easily be someone else. Peters might also be satisfied to go through with what he has, but that'll be dependent on performance levels over the summer.
Diggs is talking when approached. Aiyuk is staying silent, which is smart. But for both, Peters holds all the cards.
That won't change.
