Green Bay Packers: Lock up Top Target With Lucrative 4-year Extension

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson successfully recovered from an ACL tear in just 9 months and 21 days and went on to have one of his best seasons as a pro. Watson hauled in 35 passes for 611 yards and six touchdowns across ten regular-season games, and at that pace, he would have finished with 59 receptions for 1,039 yards and ten touchdowns in a 17-game season. He also added three receptions for 30 yards and a touchdown in the Wild Card while posting one drop, gaining 147 yards after the catch, going 11-for-23 on contested targets, and 9-for-20 for 294 yards and four touchdowns on passes over 20 yards over his 11 appearances.

Watson enters the final year of his one-year, $11 million contract extension he signed last season. He is scheduled to earn a $3.425 million base salary, a per-game active bonus totaling $1.825 million, a $500,000 workout bonus, and a $6.319 million cap hit. The Packers were interested in securing their top receiver to a new deal this offseason.

His $27.625 million annual salary makes him the 16th-highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL. If you include last year’s extension, Watson’s contract is essentially a five-year, $121.5 million deal, averaging $24.3 million a year and dropping him to the 20th-highest-paid receiver.
