Liverpool have made contact with RB Leipzig to sign Yan Diomande according to David Ornstein.
Diomande has emerged as one of Liverpool’s priority targets for the upcoming summer window, with the club seeking to fill the void left by Mohamed Salah’s departure at the end of the season.
The winger has just completed a breakout year with RB Leipzig after arriving from Leganes last year, producing 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 games in all competitions.
David Ornstein, reporting in the Athletic, has revealed that Liverpool is currently in the lead, but the German outfit do not want to sell their star 19-year-old if they can avoid it:
“Liverpool have made contact with RB Leipzig as they step up their pursuit of forward Yan Diomande,” Ornstein reported alongside Bundesliga specialist Sebastian Stafford-Bloor.
“The Merseyside club are also in the strongest position with the player over a potential deal at present.”
Ornstein confirmed that Diomande’s current deal does not contain a release clause.
It’s added that the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City remain keen on the Ivory Coast international, with the PSG president holding a good relationship with his RB Leipzig counterpart:
“Paris Saint-Germain maintain a strong interest of their own but are not currently as advanced as Liverpool, who have a ready-made slot in the team following Mohamed Salah’s departure. PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi does, however, hold a good relationship with Red Bull managing director Oliver Mintzlaff.”
“Manchester City are also among a host of admirers, though they have yet to make as significant inroads.”
Earlier this week, the player seemed to suggest he was open to a move to PSG, saying to L’Équipe
“My future? I have a team that takes care of that,” Diomande said.
“I try to stay as focused as possible. I’ve loved PSG since I was little. I think my father was a PSG supporter. But I’m not thinking about the future, I’m staying focused on the World Cup. We’ll see what happens after that.”
