Recently, the Dallas Mavericks made headlines by firing head coach Jason Kidd in what was the first big move of Masai Ujiri's tenure in the front office. The Mavericks are now looking for the next coach to try to help take Cooper Flagg and company to the next level.
ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel has since reported on the Mavericks' reported interest in Duke head coach Jon Scheyer, which does not appear to have much traction, and now, another college basketball head coach has appeared on Dallas' wish list.
“It remains to be seen whether Duke's Jon Scheyer or Michigan's Dusty May reach full-fledged candidate status with Dallas since both are so entrenched with their universities, but league sources tell The Stein Line that there has been exploratory conversation with both college titans to try to determine if there is any interest,” reported NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer on Stein's Substack.
May just won a national championship with the Michigan Wolverines this past season, and at this point, it wouldn't appear that he would have much interest in taking his talents to the NBA level either, in addition to Scheyer.

Stein and Fischer also listed prominent NBA assistants like Micah Nori of the Minnesota Timberwolves, who coached that team for part of their 2024 playoff run, as candidates whom Dallas has interest in.
Overall, whoever takes the head coaching gig in Dallas will be joining a team that is all-in on building around Flagg, who won the Rookie of the Year award for his efforts during the 2025-26 season.
It remains to be seen what changes Ujiri will make to the roster this year as the Mavericks enter the next phase of their rebuild.
