As the Pittsburgh Steelers wrap up mandatory minicamp Thursday, GM Omar Khan is busy putting the finishing touches on the offseason roster for the Black and Gold.
After signing veteran tryout players in TE Robert Tonyan and LB Jamin Davis, the Steelers needed to create some roster space. Rookie undrafted free agent TE Chamon Metayer is the odd man out.
The Steelers announced they’ve waived Metayer, clearing space on the roster for Tonyan, who has a history with head coach Mike McCarthy and quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Pittsburgh previously signed Metayer right after the 2026 NFL Draft, bringing the Arizona State tight end into the fold with a shot to grab a roster spot behind Darnell Washington and Pat Freiermuth under position coach Robert Kugler.
Metayer received a $10,000 signing bonus from the Steelers, so he will count $3,333 in dead money this year and the remaining 6,667 is dead money for 2027, due to him being waived after June 1.
Last season with the Sun Devils, Metayer hauled in 38 receptions for 375 yards and four touchdowns. That career-best production came after he hauled in 32 receptions for 306 yards and five touchdowns in 2024 at Arizona State.
Metayer previously spent time with Cincinnati and Colorado in college before breaking out with the Sun Devils.
Tight end was always a position the Steelers could add to this offseason after cutting Jonnu Smith and losing Connor Heyward in free agency to the Las Vegas Raiders. While the Steelers did draft TE/FB Riley Nowakowski in the fifth round, the belief is the Indiana product will play primarily fullback.
So depth was needed. Tonyan could answer that depth need.
Metayer had some intrigue coming out of Arizona State. He measured in a 6037, 252 pounds and recorded a 34.5-inch vertical jump, along with a 9’10” broad jump. He was one of two UDFA tight ends signed by the Steelers, and now USC’s Lake McRee is the lone remaining rookie UDFA in the tight ends room.
The Steelers roster remains at 91 players with Thursday’s moves.
