Liverpool have confirmed the appointment of Andoni Iraola as their new manager, ushering in a new era at Anfield following the dismissal of Arne Slot.

Slot’s tenure came to an abrupt end despite delivering the club’s 20th league title in his debut campaign.

A dramatic downturn in form during the 2025/26 season ultimately proved decisive, with Liverpool suffering19 defeats across all competitions and finishing25 points behind Premier League champions Arsenal, while also ending the campaign without silverware.

The decision reflects a broader strategic reset by the club’s hierarchy, who are seeking a return to a more aggressive, high-intensity style of play.

Iraola, 43, fits that vision.

Speaking to liverpoolfc.com after being announced, the Spaniard said, “Really excited, really excited.”

“Because obviously you know about Liverpool, you know that it’s a big club, a massive club, one of the biggest in the world.”

“But feeling inside and understanding a little bit more of this club, I always thought it’s a special club.”

“You don’t need a lot of things to get attracted by Liverpool. Liverpool is Liverpool.”

“But obviously the atmosphere, the supporters, the club, the players, the chance for me to coach top-level players, the chance to fight for titles. I think it cannot be more attractive than this.”

”It’s difficult to find it.”

”So, really excited to start.”

The Spaniard arrives after an impressive spell with Bournemouth, where he guided the club to a6th-place finish and European qualification, while also overseeing aclub-record 18-game unbeaten run.

Known for his high-pressing, vertical football influenced by Marcelo Bielsa, Iraola’s tactical philosophy aligns closely with Liverpool’s historic identity under Jurgen Klopp.

His appointment signals a clear stylistic shift following criticism of Slot’s more conservative approach.

The managerial change comes amid significant squad upheaval.

Centre-back Ibrahima Konate departs the club on a free transfer after failing to agree a contract extension, bringing an end to his five-year stay at Anfield.

Liverpool are expected to undergo a major rebuild this summer, with multiple incomings and outgoings anticipated as Iraola reshapes the squad to suit his system.

Reports also indicate he is keen to bring trusted backroom staff with him as part of the transition.

With a Premier League title just one year ago and now a complete reset underway, Liverpool enter the 2026/27 season at a crossroads, placing their faith in Iraola to restore intensity, identity, and competitiveness at the highest level.
