The Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback room has become a huge storyline this offseason. Since Kyler Murray joined the team, folks have wondered how J.J. McCarthy would deal with another starting quarterback.
Things got even murkier when McCarthy made certain comments at OTAs and there were reports that he wasn’t happy with the Vikings’ decision. Still, according to head coach Kevin O’Connell, things inside the building aren’t nearly as bad as the negative storylines out there.

Speaking to reporters during OTAs this week, O’Connell was asked about McCarthy’s reaction to Murray’s arrival and whether the QB competition has created any awkwardness within the room.
The Vikings coach did not sound concerned.
“I think he’s handled it really well. He’s been great in the meeting rooms, spending a little bit more time with those guys and the dialogue between the group.”

O’Connell’s comments arrive after weeks of speculation surrounding Minnesota’s quarterback situation. Much of the discussion stemmed from McCarthy’s remarks when he was asked about working alongside Murray. The former first-round pick compared the arrangement to two students sitting on opposite sides of a classroom, a comment that quickly gained traction online.
Not long after, SportsBoom’s Jason La Canfora reported that an anonymous NFL general manager believed that McCarthy wanted out of the Vikings following Murray’s signing.
The Vikings have never publicly indicated that is the case. In fact, O’Connell’s latest comments painted a completely different picture. Rather than describing friction between the QBs, he pointed to increased communication and engagement within the group.
Murray downplays any idea of tension too. He says McCarthy often asked questions and was open to advice during meetings and practices earlier this offseason. Both players get that they’re competitors but want what’s best for the team. So, this rivalry keeps being a huge story as training camp gets closer.
Murray enters camp as the favorite after arriving in the Vikings with eight seasons of NFL experience and multiple Pro Bowl appearances on his résumé. Meanwhile, McCarthy is looking to bounce back from an injury-marred 2025 season and show the progress the organization has been hoping to see.
As for now, O’Connell appears more interested in how the room functions than in outside opinions about the depth chart, and based on his assessment, McCarthy’s response to the challenge has been exactly what the Vikings wanted when they added another veteran QB to the mix.
