The Pittsburgh Steelers and GM Omar Khan came to agreements on nearly $200 million worth of extensions in the last 48 hours with outside linebacker Nick Herbig and tight end Darnell Washington, locking up key pieces from their 2023 draft class.
They aren’t done yet, either.
According to local Steelers insider Mark Kaboly, cornerback Joey Porter Jr. will have a deal soon, too.
“The Steelers are still very interested in signing cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to a long-term extension that could be anywhere between $25 and $30 million per season,” Kaboly writes on X. “That would require the Steelers to restructure a handful of contracts, which they are more than willing to do.
“With Porter, it’s a matter of when the deal gets done, not if.”
Coming into the offseason, the general belief was that Porter would be the Steelers’ top priority for an extension.
He was dominant in 2025, especially late in the season, holding opposing quarterbacks to under a 50% completion rate when he was in coverage. He also had one interception and 11 passes defensed and cut way down on penalties, drawing just six flags last season.
Porter had a real argument to make the Pro Bowl but was overlooked. Still, the Steelers know what they have in the former second-round pick, and the goal is to lock him up long term.
It will be pricey though, and Kaboly believes an extension with Porter will fall somewhere between $25 and $30 million per year. That is in line with recent deals for high-end cornerbacks Trent McDuffie with the Los Angeles Rams and Sauce Gardner with the Indianapolis Colts.
All signs point to Porter getting a new deal. It might not be in the next few days or weeks, and it could theoretically play out into training camp. But based on Kaboly’s reporting there’s no doubt a deal will get done between player and franchise, keeping Porter in the Black and Gold long term.
