College Football 27 is entering its third release since returning to the scene of sports gaming. During a virtual press conference prior to the YouTube reveal event, Scott O'Gallagher detailed the overhauls to gameplay, visuals and presentation. The focus is for the game to be Built From Gameday, and for those looking for the major X's and O's, Coach Mode will be available in the game. This isn't a headliner, but this is a big update to add a new way to play. There's plenty more here, so let's get into it. Defense wins championships especially after Indiana last year, and they're putting a focus on this. Oh, and College Football 27 will be on PC for the first time. By the way, this game is going to share everything with Madden NFL 27 in terms of the gameplay changes. They are now more connected than ever.
Defense Certainly Wins Championships
Indiana's defense dominated in the College Football Playoffs last year, securing the championship even though they had pretty decent offense, too. In the NFL, the three of the four teams in the conference championships had top five defenses. The defensive side of the ball will be getting a coverage revamp, which is the biggest in EA SPORTS history. This is for both College Football 27 and for Madden NFL 27. They will be connected in their additions, but adjusted to suit each sport's style. New Smart Zones will have defenders playing with anticipation for the first time. Rather than waiting in the zone for someone to get close, This is big for crossing routes, so this should eliminate the short route abuse that can be taken. This should allow for other levels on the offense to open up, but this means safeties in the box and linebackers will attack at different levels if they read someone coming across. Player ratings will dictate how well this works. You can adjust this pre-play or per player on how aggressive or conservative you want this to be.

Redzone-specific behavior is allowing for more spatial awareness. No more hitches or corner routes in the back of the endzone. Improvements to double teams and a new focus on coverage will shore up the defense. Players can also set coach adjustments for 25 custom checks. You can now set your distinct style with multiple defensive looks along with setting the aggression levels. Finally, new DB/WR jostile mechanics will put a focus on three different points on a route: move point, cut point and flight point. This means great corners that didn't have the speed can lock onto a receiver and attempt to hold off the speedsters. This changes the timing of routes and will be seen visually. Will have to see how well this plays out in both games, but it seems it would be more prevalant on the professional side of things with the NFL.

Coach Mode Details and Pre-Play Controls
Coach Mode will allow for the usage of specific cameras on the field. You have the option to select a primary receiver on a play. You can also call audibles and hot routes before a play. Just like in real life, the headset will shut off before the end of the game, so you will just have to trust your players. You will be open to also sub players in immediately rather than the next play, and this is in regular play, as well.
A big addition to normal gameplay is the Coach Chat. You will go in and open the dynamic subs menu, identify the cold icon, and attempt to talk the player up. You only get three of these per game. This will return them to a neutral state. Coach Chat, however, is exclusive to College Football 27. Everything else mentioned above will be a part of Madden. There will be a bit more micromanaging in both games going forward.

Now in the action, EA has added a new option for the Tackle Stick. Much like the Boom Stick where you can go for bit hits high and cuts low, both games will see new additions to the other directions on the right stick. You also no longer have to come off the stick to finish the tackle. Left will have you lunge for a tackle and while going right on the stick will have you do a wrap up. Timing-based catching will also be available with new indicators: red means you caught late, yellow slightly early, and results vary based on ratings. Green is perfect.
Pre-play controls allow for both games to easier and faster to get going than ever. Everything is mapped to the right stick. Holding down the left trigger initiates the global adjustment hud. This allows adjustements for leverage, technique, smart zones and the ability to double team and roll coverage. You can also now save 20 custom adjustments on offense and defense. The amount of options in the settings menu, at least what was shown for College Football 27, allows for deeper game planning on different coverages including cover 3, 4 and 6. They want you to play this your way.

Everybody's Team is Someone's Favorite Team
Time to change directions a bit to where both games aren't interconnected. EA has done an excellent job of creating these distinct college atmospheres, and it will continue to do so. A focus on new storytelling to give a narrative to each game is being implemented. 138 fight songs are now in the game along with 90 new and revamped chants. The University of South Carolina won the Metallica Contest for best song, so they recorded Sad But True for the game along with others including Campus Clash and Trap Queen. New songs for the game include Joker and the Thief, Narco and even EA Themes from Battlefield, Madden, NHL and Command & Conquer (please make a new one).
Hanging mouthguards will be added to players in both Madden NFL 27 and College Football 27. Backplates will also be custom to their respective teams. You can now expect dynamic weather with full snow field degradation. This dynamic change will go from play to play rather than quarter to quarter. Joel Klatt has been added to the playoff commentary team and Holly Rowe will be a sideline reporter for the game. Lastly, 1,500 new playbooks ahve been added to College Football 27 including the Shotgun Power I Tight formation from West Virginia.

Mascot Mashup makes a long-awaited return as you can jump in solo, on the couch with a friend or online. There are a 119 total mascots in total with ten being unlocked at launch. No, you don't have to pay for them. Simply competing in Play Now unlocks more mascots. There is also a connection to the Trophy Room. The effect that home field advantage has in this game is gigantic, but Madden will be getting an implementation of something similar.
Madden NFL 27 Specific Updates
For Madden NFL 27, a new measurement is available for stadium noise. A decibal meter will bring more vibration to the screen in the game, but there won't be any squiggly lines or what is at the level of College Football 27. Players can get hot and cold in Madden NFL 27. Dynamic Weather plays a part and includes accumulation, surface collision, and plays into the homefield advantage. Smart Coach 2.0 will provide hints that pop up on the screen during pre-play.

The biggest impact to the gameplay will come from the CPU AI, and this can open a door to the future. Machine Learning technology has been implemented for the computer ball carrier. Sure, this has looked a lot better in recent years, especially with the quarterback tendencies, but a model that isn't so linear will be here for ball carriers. This model was trained by the best in the studio. This can potentially play into another new feature for the game known as the Persona Engine, which is in another article.
With the unified football identity, the abilities for players will be revamped. College Football 27 will remain with a system. However, Madden will utilize a tier of abilities from that system. Distinct Progression ranging from bronze to gold. Each tier will come with a different set of tools to utilize. These Abilities in Madden are unlimited, but hot and cold streaks can affect these. By the way, the Tush Push is in the game, and there's a meter for any short yardage play rather than getting that freebie every time.
A lot of these updates and shared features are aspects that can benefit the gameplay of both games. The games can be further adjusted to better separate how each sport works. College Football 27 is coming to PC, and while Madden has been on PC, it hasn't been up to spec. That changes this year as it will be on par with the best console versions. This also means that the PS5 Pro will now go over 100 FPS in the game, and that can be set in the menu. Most likely this is the same for the Xbox Series X.
