Last season saw Newcastle United be forced to ship out Alexander Isak to Liverpool after the Swedish striker practically refused to play for the Magpies during the start of the Premier League campaign. When Isak was sent to Anfield, he was sent for a whopping £125 million, meaning that Newcastle had some money to spend on his replacement.
This would lead the Magpies to look towards Brentford’s Yoan Wissa, who was coming off an impressive campaign that saw him record 24 goal involvements, as the Bees looked to come to the reality of an Ivan Toney-less squad.
Given this output, when Newcastle signed Wissa for £55m, it was deemed a potential under-the-radar signing, and all eyes were on how he would adapt to life at St. James Park. However, it became apparent over the course of the season that Wissa wasn’t going to live up to the expectations put upon him by the footballing world, as he’d end his first season donning the Black and White with only four goal involvements, 20 fewer than what he put up the season prior.
Newcastle is looking to move on
While he is only one year into his contract with Newcastle, it appears that the team could be looking to part ways with the 29-year-old, as reported by Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke.
“Newcastle United are ready to sign off on a “big-name signing” once they can get striker Yoane Wissa off their wage bill this summer, sources have told Football Insider,” O’Rourke reports.
Their ability to sign off on Wissa’s replacement has been made more likely, on the financial end of things, after the sale of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona in late June, a deal that was worth € 70 million.
This influx of cash is certainly going to help with Newcastle’s finances, as O’Rourke reports that the team is fully aware that there lies a possibility that they won’t be recouping a profit on Wissa’s name if a move were to transpire.
“Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness told Football Insider at the start of May that Newcastle are ready to take a loss on Wissa this summer, rather than holding out for anything close to the £55m that they paid for him,” O’Rourke states.
It is worth noting that Wissa will be on the global stage in a few weeks, as he’s set to represent his national team, Congo DR, in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, playing in a group that includes Portugal, Colombia, and Uzbekistan.
