Back in the day, Arsenal captain Tony Adams was often called “donkey” by opposition fans, mainly because he was viewed early in his career, as a powerful but sometimes awkward, error-prone centre-back rather than a graceful defender.
And now it seems that the club have renewed their links with the four-legged mammals by donating 40 pairs of socks to a Norfolk sanctuary.
The footless socks are being used to protect sore legs, hold bandages in place and prevent fly irritation for animals recovering at the charity’s equine hospital. Staff described the unusual donation as a “game changer” for animal care.
The idea is part of the club’s efforts to reduce waste and support good causes.
Rumours that Mikel Arteta intends to field one of the donkeys in his back four next season have been discounted.
