Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly pushing the club to make a serious move for AC Milan forward Rafael Leao this summer, with the Portuguese star increasingly linked with a departure from the Serie A giants ahead of the new season.
ARSENAL are expected to strengthen several areas of the squad during the transfer window as Arteta looks to build a team capable of ending the club’s long wait for a Premier League title.
While a new striker remains a priority, reports suggest Arsenal’s manager is also eager to add another elite wide attacker, and Leao has emerged as one of the standout names on the club’s shortlist.
Speculation surrounding the 27-year-old has intensified following reports that Leao is open to a new challenge after an inconsistent campaign at AC Milan. The Portuguese international remains one of the most highly-rated attacking players in European football, but Milan’s failure to consistently challenge for major honours has fuelled suggestions that he could seek a move elsewhere this summer.
Sources across Europe have linked several leading clubs with the winger, including Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and clubs from the Premier League. However, Arsenal are believed to be among the most interested parties, with Arteta reportedly viewing Leao as a player capable of transforming his attack.
The Arsenal boss is said to admire Leao’s unique combination of pace, power and technical quality. Equally effective driving in from the left flank or operating in more central positions, the Portugal international would offer Arsenal another dynamic option alongside Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.
Club officials are understood to have been monitoring the player’s situation for some time, and reports suggest exploratory discussions have already taken place regarding the possibility of a transfer. While no formal offer has yet been submitted, Arsenal are believed to be assessing the financial package required to complete a deal.
Any move is expected to be complicated by Milan’s valuation. Despite the growing speculation, the Italian club remain reluctant to lose one of their most valuable assets and would likely demand a fee in excess of €80 million before considering negotiations.
For ARSENAL, however, the potential signing would represent a major statement of intent. The club has made significant progress under Arteta in recent seasons but has fallen just short in key competitions.
Adding a player of Leao’s calibre would underline Arsenal’s ambitions to compete with Europe’s elite and provide Arteta with another game-changing weapon in the final third.
