Andoni Iraola’s first press conference delayed despite Liverpool unveiling

Andoni Iraola will not hold a press conference after his unveiling at Liverpool, with the new head coach not addressing the media until later in the summer.

Iraola was formally announced as Liverpool head coach on Thursday with widespread praise for the passion and commitment he showed in his first interview.

But those hoping to hear more from the Spaniard with questions from the local press will be left to wait until pre-season starts.

Liverpool have not organised an unveiling press conference for Iraola as was the case with Jurgen Klopp back in 2015, with the 43-year-old instead departing Merseyside for his home in San Sebastian soon after completing his switch.

He will now take in valuable time off with his family after the conclusion of an historic third season in charge of Bournemouth.

His first press conference is set to take place later in the summer when Liverpool’s pre-season preparations are underway, though it remains to be seen whether that will be at the AXA Training Centre or on tour in the United States.

Iraola is certain to be met with an increase in interest from his time as Bournemouth head coach, with briefings at the south coast club occupied by considerably fewer journalists.

Which questions can Andoni Iraola expect in his first press conference?

The press room at the AXA is typically packed not only with local reporters but also those from the national press and often from abroad too.

Delaying Iraola’s first press conference avoids any awkward questions over the composition of his backroom staff and decisions over certain players.

Liverpool remain in negotiations with Bournemouth over deals for coaches Tommy Elphick and Shaun Cooper along with analyst Tom Webber, while fitness coach Pablo de la Torre is expected to join.

There has been speculation over a former player joining Iraola’s staff with Thiago Alcantara and James Milner popular names but no clarity has been offered at this stage.

Meanwhile there is uncertainty over a number of current players including Harvey Elliott, who will report back for the start of pre-season after a failed loan at Aston Villa.

Iraola will also need to appoint a new vice-captain following the departure of Andy Robertson, while plans are in place to strengthen his squad with a number of signings.

The club can hope to have many of those in place by the time Iraola sits in front of the media for the first time next month.
